After matchday five, how are the British sides faring in the Champions League - who can still go through, who's teetering and who is out?

How Man Utd can still qualify...or head out of Europe

Manchester United remain bottom of Group A after throwing away a 3-1 lead at Galatasaray to draw 3-3.

But United can still progress from the final round of matches on Tuesday December 12.

Man Utd must beat Bayern Munich and hope Galatasaray draw at FC Copenhagen to qualify.

If either Copenhagen or Galatasaray win, United will be knocked out of the Champions League.

After their surprise 0-0 stalemate in Germany, which has left them second in the group, a draw for Copenhagen, meanwhile, would be sufficient for them to progress to the last-16 so long as United don't beat Bayern.

United must take at least a point against Bayern to have any hope of playing European football after Christmas. As it stands, United are fourth in their group and heading out of Europe.

A draw against Bayern and a Copenhagen win would see United finish level on points with Galatasaray but finish bottom of the group because of their inferior head-to-head record against the Turkish side.

A draw against Bayern and a Galatasaray win would see United finish level on points with Copenhagen but qualify for the Europa League due to scoring more goals in the group stage than the Danish side.

But if United don't beat Bayern, they cannot finish higher than third in Group A.

When is the CL last-16 draw?

The Champions League round of 16 draw takes place on Monday December 18.

The round of 16 is played over the course of four weeks:

First legs: February 13/14/20/21, 2024 Second legs: March 5/6/12/13, 2024

Arsenal and City through as group winners...and who else is through?

In Group B, Arsenal thrashed Lens to qualify as group winners with a match to spare, with PSV Eindhoven guaranteed the runners-up spot in the group.

Manchester City secured top spot in Group G and a seeding in the last-16 draw after they beat RB Leipzig 3-2, who are now sure of second place in the section.

Arsenal and City are among 12 teams now certain to be in the last 16:

Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Dortmund, Inter, Lazio, Leipzig, Man City, PSV, Real Madrid, Real Sociedad

Of the 12, only four teams are certain to progress as group winners:

Arsenal, Bayern, Man City, Real Madrid

All of the remaining matches will be played on matchday six across Tuesday December 12 and Wednesday December 13.

And what of Newcastle?

But Newcastle's fate is now out of their hands. Kylian Mbappe's stoppage-time equaliser after a dubious penalty award by VAR snatched a 1-1 draw for PSG deep into stoppage time.

They must now beat AC Milan at St James' Park in their final Group F game and hope already-qualified Dortmund can pick up at least a point at the Westfalenstadion against PSG to leapfrog the French champions and sneak into second spot. However, the Rossoneri can also still progress to the knockout phase by beating Newcastle and then hoping the Ligue 1 champions lose at Dortmund on matchday six.

However, Celtic are out of the Champions League and cannot qualify for the Europa League knockout spots after two late Ciro Immobile goals saw Lazio beat them 2-0 in Rome. That win sees the Romans join Atletico Madrid in the last 16, with Diego Simeone's side now needing just a point at home to Lazio on matchday six to seal first place in Group E.

What about the rest of Europe?

In Group C, Real's win over Napoli ensured top spot for Los Blancos, but the Serie A side will join then in the last 16 as long as they manage a draw at home to third-placed Braga on matchday six.

Meanwhile, both Real Sociedad and Inter Milan are locked together on 11 points at the top of Group D, with the final round of games set to decide which of the two claim first place.

And finally, Barcelona have made it through from Group H, leaving Porto and Shakhtar Donetsk - both locked together on nine points - to fight it out for the other place when they meet in a winner-takes-all clash at the Dragao on December 13.
